Safety and Anti-Violence

Risk Watch

Injury is the number one health risk for children under the age of 14 and the vast majority of accidents leading to injury are both predictable and preventable. We offer Risk Watch, an injury prevention program and curriculum developed by the National Fire Protection Association. Our high school students are trained to deliver Risk Watch information to summer campers in order to remain safe in their homes, at school, and in their communities. Organized by age-appropriate teaching modules, children learn:

  • Water safety
  • Fire safety
  • Firearm injury prevention
  • Bike and pedestrian safety
  • General household safety issues

Campers attend workshops for 4 hours each week. Following the instructional portion of the curriculum, they participate in group activities to reinforce their learning and to identify hazards and ways to actively avoid or prevent them.

For example, students learn to put out fire on their clothing and avoid smoke inhalation through the “Stop, Drop and Roll Relay” and “Stay Low and Go,” obstacle courses of cones and hula-hoops. They then play trivia games where they reinforce how to prevent being injured.

The Risk Watch program offers a fun and interactive learning environment to reinforce the important lessons and knowledge critical to being safe.
