Academic and Social Development

K-8 School Teams

Our school-based teams enrich the school environment by supporting teachers and students in and out of the classroom during the school day, before school, and after school. These teams are a flexible resource to schools. By providing a range of customized academic and personal development programs, as well as youth leadership opportunities, AmeriCorps members:

  • Ensure students come to school more frequently, are ready to learn, and experience more success
  • Create an environment in which students feel safe, with the goal of defusing and preventing potentially violent situations and equipping students with tools to build a healthier and safer school environment
  • Assist in classrooms to effectively reduce class size, decrease disciplinary issues, and support increased academic performance.
  • Reinforce classroom instruction and engage students in experiential activities after school to support their personal and social growth, including their civic education
  • Promote increased involvement of families, community members, and local organizations.

Some examples of programs offered by school teams include:

  • Breakfast programs to encourage students to start the day with a healthy meal, participate in learning activities and games, complete their homework, and start the school day with a smile on their faces.
  • In-class assistance and tutoring with an emphasis on literacy.
  • Socialized recess to promote peaceful playgrounds.
  • Accommodation rooms and inschool suspension for students who become disruptive in class to help them identify inappropriate behavior and learn ways to manage their anger and frustration.
  • Afterschool activities and clubs including homework help, youth mentoring-empowerment groups, drill and stepping teams, basketball teams, chess and poetry clubs, and art programs.
