The National School and Community Corps (NSCC) AmeriCorps program recently hosted seven students from the University of Kansas who are volunteering their time as part of the NSCC's sixth annual Alternative Spring Break Program.

The University of Kansas students volunteered at Morrison Elementary School in Olney. The collegians, along with the NSCC, worked with Morrison students during regular class time and assisted in the NSCC's after school programs.

A highlight of the Kansas students' week of community service took place on March 22, when they worked with Morrison Elementary's fourth through eight grade students in one-on-one and group tutoring, and conducted a mask-making workshop.

The National School and Community Corps is the largest AmeriCorps national service program in Pennsylvania, with 250 members serving throughout the year in 34 Philadelphia public schools. Corpsmembers work with students and their families year-round through tutoring, mentoring and service-learning, literacy, the arts and other activities.

This is the sixth year the NSCC has hosted an alternative spring break program with students from the University of Kansas.
